2016 Castello di Monsanto - Chianti Classico Riserva DOCG
a € 26,- p. fles
90% sangiovese 10% canaiolo/colorino druiven
WIJNPERS over Monsanto wijnen: "The 2015 Chianti Classico Riserva is bold, ample and powerful, with a real sense of breadth in this vintage. The tannins need time to soften, as the wine is a bit burly at this stage. This is another stellar release for a wine that routinely overachieves its peer group and price. Dense and packed, with tremendous structure, the 2015 has a lot to say. But readers will have to be patient, as it is very clearly early days for this wine." VINOUS”
"Castello di Monsanto is in a warm pocket but the vineyards are well-ventilated by sea breezes and temperatures fall sharply at night. The Bianchi family uses autochthonous grapes only for their Chianti Classico. In the Riserva, Colorino is added for colour and Canaiolo Nero for its floral bouquet. Vibrant and clearly defined aromas of pepper, dogwood flower and red cherry lead into a much more austere expression on the palate. It possesses a tight yet succulent core with assertive tannins and a long, earthy and savoury finish where nuances of iron and orange peel promise an appetising future." DECANTER”
"Tight and tannic for now, featuring cherry, black currant, leather, iron, juniper and tar flavors. Firmly structured, meaty and balanced on the tannic side, with a lingering finish." WINE SPECTATOR”
"Aromas of plums, cherries and hints of green olives. White truffles and deep earth, too. Full-bodied, so layered and beautiful with a fabulous texture and ripe tannins. It is so pure and minimalist in the end, showing the effect of traditional, hands-off winemaking. Don’t miss this. Decant before serving. One for the cellar." JAMES SUCKLING”
Offering richness, density and a sharply delineated approach, the 2016 Chianti Classico Riserva is an elegant but also classic expression from this storied estate. The best qualities of this vintage come through here with tight and focused fruit flavors and clear perfumes of wild cherry, rose and button mushroom. There is a lingering note of cherry sweetness that serves to glue the wine's other attributes, like its freshness and integrated tannins, together in harmony. Pair it with a veal and mushroom lasagna.Robert Parker (Monica Larner: 93 RP)

WIJNPERS over Monsanto wijnen:
With this vintage, this wine has been bumped up from Riserva to Gran Selezione status—representing the first stab at this category from the folks at Castello di Monsanto. The 2014 Chianti Classico Gran Selezione Vigneto Il Poggio delivers as much power and intensity Rigorously produced in the traditional style that has become a hallmark at Castello di Monsanto, the bouquet embraces savory aromas of leather, potting soil and Porcini mushroom. The primary fruit is a little faded in 2014, but you do get blackberry and blackcurrants on the finish. “Robert Parker”
"Aromas of underbrush, dark-skinned berry, espresso menthol and scorched soil lead the nose. On the elegant, structured palate, firm, polished tannins carry dried black cherry, raspberry, cinnamon toast and a touch of anise. "WINE ENTHUSIAST”
"A mix of graphite, tea, cherry and raspberry flavors are the highlights of this elegant, firmly structured red. Dense, dusty tannins reign on the finish. On the rustic side, yet with plenty of personality. This gets better with air. "WINE SPECTATOR”
"Monsanto's 2011 Chianti Classico Riserva Vigneto Il Poggio offers striking depth in the rich, flashy style of the year. This is a surprisingly open-knit vintage for Il Poggio, that clearly reflects the personality of the year. Succulent red cherry, raspberry mints, tobacco, cedar and licorice all gain a measure of added textural richness in this warm vintage. At the same time, there is plenty of Sangiovese kick to keep things bright throughout. "VINOUS”
"Very ripe fruit showing the warmth of the growing season of the vintage. Full and round with plenty of fruit and a savory finish. A classic Chianti Classico."JAMES SUCKLING”
